A Flower In Flower

Keir Smith 2014

Originally on display at the now-defunct Ironbridge Open-Air Museum Of Steel Sculpture, 'A Flower In Flower' was sited at Grizedale in 2014, seven years after Keir Smith's death, just by the stream around the back of the visitor centre. This is the second sculpture by Smith to be sited posthumously at Grizedale, an indication of how highly he is regarded there. He was a popular figure during his residencies and former Head Forester Bill Grant shared his memories of Smith in 'A Sense Of Place':

"Keir Smith, who produced his Realm Of Taurus, biked his way round the forest tracks, and became quite well-known as a first-class sculptor, but a lousy cyclist. He had been known to fall off his bike at least four times in one day!"

It seems Smith became very fond of Grizedale during his initial residency and returned for another a couple of years later. David Nash even thanked him for saving his sculpture 'Wooden Waterway' from destruction. Smith himself said of Grizedale Forest:

"So you see, in this place no man really dies. Death is merely a transition into a different kind of growth."
