Concrete Country

Lucy Tomlins 2012

Lucy Tomlins' 'Concrete Country' is a giant stile which was originally on display for a few months at Battersea Park in London. While there, it was painted bright blue (as you'll see in the pictures here) but upon its arrival in Grizedale it was given a makeover and is now a far less garish white. It can be found on the Grizedale Tarn walk, in a wooded valley not that far from the visitor centre. It's huge, two-and-a-half metres high in fact, and Tomlins had this to say about it:

"The stile, an iconic symbol of the English landscape, alludes to the feelings of freedom gained from walking surrounded by nature and it speaks of journeys, transition and movement. This, juxtaposed with the industrial materials more readily associated with the city, hopefully reflects our interconnected relationship with both of these environments as we navigate our lives between the two."
