Aeolian Flutes

Dan Fox 2020

Dan Fox's 'Aeolian Flutes' were installed on the edge of Ridding Wood in December 2020, in the clearing where the 'Grizedale Mosaic' used to be. The flutes themselves are roughly eight feet tall and have the distinction of being the only sculpture in the forest to have ever been made from bamboo. The flutes have vertical slits cut into their sides at intervals, allowing the wind to whistle through and effectively 'play' them.

Fox formed 'Sound Intervention' in 2008, as a banner under which he could bring together various artists, musicians and technicians to work on a whole range of projects in outdoor spaces, and this work forms part of that collective, 'aeolian' being an archaic word for 'wind-driven' which Fox has admirably brought back from the realms of disuse.
