Archibald Ant

Frailloop 2010

Frailloop is the working name of Gavin Darby, a sculptor who works exclusively with recycled materials. Says Darby on the Frailloop website:

"Frailloop is a reference to the weakest link in the chain. The environment is complex and interconnected, but should one part fail everything will come crashing down around our ears. Many people feel that any change they could make is so small its effect would go unnoticed. However every little step as the combined effect of many small changes is positive."

Archie sits in the middle of the cluster of buildings at the centre of Grizedale campsite. The piece has never appeared on any guide maps, but rest assured, it is most definitely there. Here's Gavin Darby's explanation of Archie's unusual origins:

"I (assisted by another artist - Obi) made a total of nine ants. The first six attended the Warriors Dance Festival at Milton Keynes headlined by The Prodigy. Two more ants were ordered by the band and their management.

The Grizedale ant followed, thanks to Arthur [Threlkeld, owner of Grizedale Campsite]. It was made in a slightly different way because we learnt lessons creating the others. This one was also likely to have a tough life in a setting that is uncontrolled. It travelled from Nottingham to Grizedale on an open trailer. I wonder what other drivers thought?"

In the end, the six ants from the original Prodigy gig were divided up among the band, with three of them residing in the back garden of the late Keith Flint.
