Serpentine Seat

Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley 1991

Some confusion exists over the various seats that have graced the Ridding Wood Trail down the years, not helped by the fact that there have been about a million different names floating around for them all.

This one was sometimes also referred to as 'Silurian Seat' and was located very early on in the walk, along the stretch by the fence and enjoying brilliant views over the field, as well as the valley beyond. I can't remember when it disappeared, but as Meg Falconer says in 'Natural Order':

"It invites one to rest before one begins. Constructed from a single beautiful S-shaped piece of oak, it still seems to be alive! It has an ancient presence, sited under a low-leaf beech canopy, one could imagine it had been there for generations."
