Signs Of Adventure

Steve Messam 2009

This project was originally commissioned by Cumbria Tourism and the various signs were scattered around the county. So, for example, the 'High Street' sign was positioned at the top of the mountain of the same name, above Haweswater. It was only later the signs came to Grizedale and were distributed about the Moor Top and Hawkshead Moor areas, in the northern end of the forest (apart from the aforementioned High Street sign, which can be found on the Millwood Trail, right next to the Nigel Ross Bench). The 'Don't Look Down' sign is located all the way up in the top-left corner of the forest, just before the track that drops down towards Coniston, the slightly pathetic shrub obscuring the view of Coniston Old Man and eradicating any hope of getting a fantastic photo. The hot air balloon sign is just around the corner from Goosey Foot Tarn and as for the rest, well, I'm pretty sure they're all gone now.

Steve Messam says about the work on his website:

"Cumbria Tourism wanted to show the variety of outdoor activities across the county whilst branding the Lakes as an exciting and forward-thinking place to visit.

The signs were fabricated by a specialist road sign manufacturer and comply with Department of Transport standards to ensure authenticity."
