Portrait of Sculptures and Places
Eric Geddes 1982
The first 'Portrait of Sculptures and Places' consisted of curved branches entwined around trunks which appear to have been cut from tree at the top of the photo. The sculpture could be found on the stony track which leads up from the Visitor Centre, near Richard Harris' 'Quarry Structure'.
Eric Geddes likes to work with whatever he can find on site, preferring to construct his sculptures manually by tying and stacking rather than using tools. As a result his sculptures rank amongst the most organic to have been built in Grizedale Forest. Based on the Isle of Wight, in 2015 Geddes
contributed to an exhibition in St Mary's Hospital on the island, which was aimed at making art more accessible to sufferers of dementia. He has also spoken frankly about his own struggles with the condition.
