Ammonite

Tim Norris 1996

Named after the extinct spiral-shaped molluscs which this sculpture resembles from above, 'Ammonite' was placed on a wooded hill just west of Satterthwaite, on the Silurian Way. It acted as a seat large enough for a fairly substantial group of people and was a deserved rest if approaching from the south, as that climb is short, but steep.

Norris' artworks often take on natural-looking forms and tend to be pleasing to look at. In 2014 he constructed a 'Willow House' on Exmoor, although work on the piece actually began in 2003 when the willow was planted and left to grow around a frame.

Tim Norris says of 'Ammonite' on his website:

"Like the slate boulders emerging from the ground, the Ammonite twists and turns, emerging from the topsoil. The shape of the piece encourages interaction, within it children can run through the hollow structure while adults can rest and enjoy the view"
