Decomposers

Karl Ciesluk 1996

Karl Ciesluk hails from Ottowa, Canada, and many examples of his work can be found dotted about the streets there. In 1995 he came to Grizedale and created three sculptures with a natural theme. 'Decomposers' was an earthworm carved into a rock up on the hill above Grizedale Tarn, but sadly the piece is no longer there. All we have is this picture from the Grizedale Archive.

Incidentally, up on the same area of high ground, there is a funnel from an old ship. In 1903, Grizedale Forest was bought by Harold Brocklebank, who set about completely rebuilding Grizedale Hall. Brocklebank made his money in shipping, and it would seem he left a little stamp on his newly-acquired land - the funnel can be found up on the hill which overlooks the tarn, although these days it is quite hard to find due to the growth of the trees around it.
