Polar Star
Masao Ueno 1990
It's all trees now, but at the northernmost part of the Carron Crag walk, after climbing from the forest road section of the Millwood Trail, the walker used to reach a sort of grassy plateau. This was the site for the second of Masao Ueno's two sculptures in Grizedale.
A star assembled using long pieces of wood, it was out of keeping with a lot of Ueno's output, as he usually works with bamboo. His art has been displayed the world over, much of it in his native Japan, of course, but also in such locations as the USA (Chicago, New Mexico and New York to be precise), Melbourne and Manila, as well as exhibitions in Italy and Serbia.
