Cone

Andy Goldsworthy 1988

Andy Goldsworthy's 'Cone' was made for the opening of the Gallery in the Forest, the art studio which opened in 1988 and housed some extra pieces of artwork to complement the sculpture programme in the forest.

The cone, an immense slate object, sat contentedly in the corner for years, until the Gallery closed its doors in 1999, when Grizedale Arts took over the running of the sculpture side of things. Their director Adam Sutherland contacted Goldsworthy to inquire about having it removed or sold, but the artist apparently refused. So it sat in the corner of what was now an office for a couple more years until the building was re-appropriated once more, this time into a bike shop. In 2001 the people in charge put their foot down and the cone was dismantled.
