Nigel Ross Bench

Nigel Ross 2012

In case you're thinking it's a bit egotistical to name a sculpture after yourself, the title of 'Nigel Ross Bench' was bestowed upon this seat by the people at Grizedale rather than the artist himself. It is carved from oak and is a direct replacement for Ross' previous 'Oak Wave Seat' which used to occupy the same spot.

Dedicated to Anne Harrison, the bench bears the inscription 'The joy you gave us lives on and on' - it's just about visible in the picture above. What isn't visible is the view walkers resting here can enjoy; by the time I reached it, a freezing early-morning fog had come down, so you'll have to take my word for it when I say that this spot enjoys a lovely vista of the upper end of the valley, and looks down upon the visitor centre.
