We Free Kings

Will Glanfield 1992

'We Free Kings' was a bench with three separate narrow backrests, loacted towards the far end of the Ridding Wood, and down the years, the name has been erroneously thought by many (myself included) to be 'We Three Kings' - presumably, whoever first put it on the scuplture map got it wrong; the double meaning was wholly intentional. Will Glanfield himself sets the record straight:

"The actual title I gave the piece is 'We Free Kings'. Unfortunately, this seems to have been taken as a spelling error by others, and all subsequent entries have called it We Three Kings, eventually including me, succumbing in despair! The true story is that the title is a play on words, mixing up the notion of the oak as the king of the woods with the carol 'We Three Kings', as played on the fabulous album 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk (I was then, and still am a keen saxophonist)."

When making the sculpture, Glanfield made the most of the available local amenities, as he describes:

"I sourced freshly-felled oak trees from Coniston Water, and oversaw the milling process at Hawkshead Sawmill, just a few miles down the road. The Grizedale Centre Workshop was made available to me, so I was able to construct both pieces under cover, with basic hand and machine tools."
