Slate Flight

Chris Booth 1995

Occupying a beautiful spot overlooking Grizedale Tarn, New Zealand artist Chris Booth's 'Slate Flight' was never officially recognised on the guide maps, which is a shame, as it is an interesting and stubbornly gravity-defying piece. A set of huge slabs sticking out of the rockface (they are recycled gateposts, apparently), the piece has seen some damage over the years - notably from some snowfall in 1997 - but is for the most part still there.

As you approach the tarn from the road, look up to your left and you'll see it sticking out from the big rock. If you're worried about spraining an ankle or falling over, resist the temptation to scramble directly up over the rocks and roots, and instead go around the back for a much easier way up.
