Mountains We Made

Charlie Whinney 2018

Built in 2017 and displayed at Brockhole on the shore of Windermere, before going on to Kendal, Charlie Whinney's 'Mountains We Made' finally arrived at Grizedale in early 2018, sited at the far end of the playground, just beyond the visitor centre. At around the same time, Grizedale also played host to an exhibition of Whinney's work, showing more examples of his ability to bend wood using steam - the same manner in which his two sculptures at Grizedale were constructed. As a result, his pieces feel very natural, and 'Mountains We Made' also boasts the ability to be walked and balanced upon, always a bonus when you're in close proximity to a play area. This was perhaps a concern which prompted the powers that be to move the work to its new home at the end of the Ridding Wood Trail. Charlie Whinney is very much an auteur in the classic Grizedale mould, with his unmistakable, distinct style evoking memories of the likes of David Nash and David Kemp. His mission statement can be found on the website for his studio:

"Charlie Whinney Studio exists to explore the relationships between materials, people and the environment. Projects blur boundaries between fine art, architecture and design, and we make almost everything ourselves".
