Stag Herd Roof
Andy Frost 1994
Don't you hate it when you're in the middle of renovating a property and a herd of deer come along and stand on the roof? Located early on in the Ridding Wood Trail, Andy Frost brought the same sense of playfulness found in his other works to a old ruin in the field, creating this popular piece. He describes the sculpture in 'Natural Order':
"A disused building, now partially re-roofed, deer emerge from the forest, inquisitive and nervous. They explore and inhabit the new space, standing staggered (hence the title), still and alert - a futile attempt to blend into new surroundings"
Back when I took these pictures, I had to vault the fence and drop down into the building, but now the field is open to the public via a gate in the car park, so if you don't mind walking all the way across, you can go and take a closer look at this fantastic sculpture, and check out the sheep hidden inside the building itself.
