At the entrance to Grizedale Campsite, an owl sits atop a tree stump, watching the road. He is the work of Frailloop, aka Gavin Darby, an artist who works with recycled materials. Oswald was put there at the request of the campsite's owner Arthur Threlkeld, after Frailloop had sited 'Archibald Ant' there a couple of years earlier. Darby said of the sculpture:

"He was once a small collection of gas bottles. Thanks to Arthur, not just for the commission, but for placing him in such a wonderful home."
