Hive

Jony Easterby 1996

'Hive' is the only sculpture to have occupied two different positions within Grizedale. Originally it hung from a lonely tree up near the summit of Bogle Crag. A few years later it was moved to the Ridding Wood trail, where it could be found in a slightly less obvious spot at the far end, again hanging from a tree. By this stage an extra element had been added to the piece; solar panels above the hive meant that some hidden speakers were able to play the sound of buzzing bees, while inside some twinkly lights blinked on and off. Of this rebooted version of 'Hive', Jony Easterby commented:

"Taking energy from the sun and sky, the hive transfers this into a dance of light and life."

In 2010, Jony Easterby went on to co-create a shelter for studying bee ecology at the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth, Wales; have a look at the pictures on Easterby's website.
