Picea

Charles Poulsen 1997

'Picea' used to be found on the wall of the building which is now the bike shop, over by the 'Ancient Forester II', just behind the visitor centre. This building has been through several incarnations since it was built.

It was originally the sawmill, but with the closure of Grizedale Hall, it slowly fell into disuse, and then disrepair. When the Grizedale Society took ownership of the building in 1987, the original plan was to knock it down and make room for some more parking spaces, but some bright spark decided to put it to better use and the Gallery In The Forest was opened.

I vaguely remember going in when I was young, it contained two more of Sally Matthews' wild boar sculptures, and there were framed photos of some of the works on the walls, as well as some of the artists' original sketches and ideas. Later, the building became the bike hire centre, before eventually turning into more of an accessories shop. Although it's a shame that the Gallery is gone, at least the future of the building seems assured.

As for 'Picea', it is apparently still in storage at Grizedale, and was recently scheduled to be hung on the outside wall of the new cafe, another building which has been through numerous changes. 'Picea' has not yet, at the time of writing anyway, re-appeared, but it is good to know it is still safe, somewhere.
