Janus

Robert Bryce Muir 2017

Robert Bryce Muir has been making metal sculptures in the style of 'Janus' for years. I'm not sure how this one came to be at the far end of the Ridding Wood Trail in 2017 but there it was, buried in the ground atop a big stick. Like Bryce Muir's other work 'Mea Culpa', it was not constructed in-situ but instead sited after the fact, and surprised the unwary walker as it almost jumped out from behind the bushes at you.

Not that you can tell from my picture but there were actually two heads here, with one face on either side. Some more of Muir's head sculptures can be found in the 'heads' section (unsurprisingly) of his website. There is in fact one called 'Janus' listed on there, from 2010, although it doesn't look like the same one. Have a look for yourself and see what you think.

Grizedale's 'Janus' lasted roughly a year before it vanished. It was never the sturdiest sculpture, stuck as it was into the ground with no apparent rooting, so perhaps it fell down. It may yet reappear somewhere else in the forest.
