Portrait of Sculptures and Places V

Eric Geddes 1982

Portrait of sculptures & places 5.png

The fifth work in Eric Geddes' set was perhaps the most precarious of the lot. The two horizontal trees, one balanced on the other, resembled a couple lying in an embrace. Given that Geddes eschews nails, glue and the like when tying and fastening his works together, it is a piece that cannot have lasted long, perhaps only until the next stiff breeze.

This being the fifth instalment in his 'Portrait of Sculptures and Places' set, I'm running out of things to say about them. If you have the time, though, check out some of his other works. Geddes is based on the Isle of Wight and many of his past sculptures have been temporary constructions built from materials found on the beach, to be later washed away with the tide. It takes a patient and dedicated artist to painstakingly stack shells, only to watch them get swept out to sea a few hours later.
