Grizedale Stag

Sophie Ryder 1986

Sophie Ryder's 'Stag' was a graceful yet delicate construction, as she notes in Bill Grant and Paul Harris' 'The Grizedale Experience':

"It's very calm working in the forest and very mysterious. I felt as if I was being overlooked by inquisitive animals, which I know I was. One thing you learn about making outdoor sculpture is that it has to be much more resilient. I found that out when parents kept lifting their kids onto the stag."

Ryder was artist-in-residence in 1986. She has had her work exhibited in Washington, The Hague, Vancouver and Hamburg to name just a handful of places, while recently a collection of her mythical, otherworldly figures was on display in the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in Palm Beach, Florida.
