Sitka Horizontalis
Charles Poulsen 1997
Photograph by Charles Poulsen
For this piece, Charles Poulsen took three tied stacks of stika spruce timber and coated them in lead, in the same manner as his other works at Grizedale. The result was a set of spruce piles seemingly frozen in time, by the side of the road up at High Bowkerstead. A couple of years after this sculpture appeared, the trees opposite it were felled and all of a sudden this became a superb viewpoint. In recent years the sculpture has fallen into disrepair, but that is perhaps to be expected in such an exposed spot.
