Wooden Walkway

Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley 1986

Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley have worked together for over three decades, with their works on display across the country. Their successful partnership started at Grizedale Forest in 1986 when they were asked to build a walkway on the far side of the stream, on the Ridding Wood Trail. Jim Partridge describes the importance of this early work to both him and Liz Walmsley:

"This curved walkway was the first project, it was the first time Liz and I worked together, the first time we made a site-specific functional piece of work, and the first time we used curved logs as our source material. So it set the scene for a large part of our subsequent career.

The Wooden Walkway was on the Ridding Wood Trail. Before the big metal footbridge was built, the path went down to a much smaller bridge across the stream, then along at a lower level than the current path, but it was subject to regular mudslides and was too steep to be wheelchair accessible. At that time, the accessible path ended at our 'Sheltered Seat'."
