Hollow Spruce

Richard Harris 1989

Richard Harris kick-started the Grizedale sculpture project with his early pieces in 1977, and in 1989 he returned to build 'Hollow Spruce', a wonderfully atmospheric wooden structure in the dense trees north of Carron Crag. It was a personal favourite of mine and was damaged when I visited it for the third time by what looked like a fallen tree pulling it apart. The next time I passed by it was gone, sadly. But while it stood, it provided quiet refuge among the trees. Harris said of the piece:

"From the forest track the Sitka spruce seems to be a solid barrier. In the forest it is dark, quiet and carpeted with pine needles. Hollow Spruce acts as a filter through which to re-explore the light, sound, colour and space of the dense spruce."

My memory is hazy but I would guess it was removed in 1997, something like that.
