Grizedale Horse
Sophie Ryder 1986
Sophie Ryder came to Grizedale in 1986 and set about building elegant animal sculptures, with Grizedale Tarn chosen as the location for this piece. I'd never heard of it before I began researching this website, but it definitely did exist. As well as the picture adorning this page, we also have this description to go off, taken from 'The Architect's Journal', Volume 187, from 1988:
"We hunted for Sophie Ryder’s Grizedale Horse, expecting to find a bold equestrian in the woods, but her horse, sculpted in concrete and local stone, was reclining inconspicuously at the base of a rock outcrop and seemed to have been formed from the bedrock itself."
