Adventure Playground
Andy Frost 1987
Also known as 'The Best Playground Ever' (by me), this was the best thing about Grizedale as a child. In the 1988 sculpture guide, Andy Frost's play area was enthusiastically described as the:
"ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND - WITH A DIFFERENCE! Designed and built by Andy Frost. A menagerie of Animal Magic!"
And a menagerie it most certainly was - it had a hedgehog you could climb on, a pair of frogs you could jump between, and the main attraction - a huge pheasant, the size of a house, which you climbed up inside to find a slide going down its back, which was every bit as good as it sounds. I spent a large portion of the late eighties and early nineties on this playground, so no doubt my younger, shell-suited self would have been devastated to see it finally removed in 2003. To soften the blow, Andy Frost was drafted in once again to construct the replacement, but to be honest, I was getting a bit old to be sliding down pheasants by that point anyway. Still, anyone who visited Grizedale as a child between 1987 and 2003 will no doubt have fond memories of this playground.
