John Mackie Seat
Nigel Ross 1995
This particular work by Nigel Ross was situated at the very beginning of the Ridding Wood trail and was unmissable thanks to its distinctive quaver-shaped top. It was dedicated to an important figure in the history of Grizedale, John Mackie. Meg Falconer writes in 'Natural Order':
"A huge slab of oak is contained within an elegant curve of a root/branch-like form. It grows out of the ground in a curve that forms an arm which protectively sweeps over ones head. This seat creates its own environment, yet echoes the thick-branched rhododendrons around it. A place to sit, meet and wait, it is visible from far down the trail."
John Mackie was the head of the Forestry Commision and a friend of Grizedale Forest. Although the wavy top has now gone, the base of the seat, which bears his name, remains.
