Stagnight
Michael Lyons 1984
Noted Staffordshire-born artist Michael Lyons spent the majority of his 1984 residency at Grizedale drawing, but he also found the time to create 'Stagnight', a small steel sculpture. Nowadays, in the wake of the Grizedale Arts free-for-all from 1999 onwards, a piece such as this would be considered positively quaint, but in the mid-eighties when all the art in the forest was crafted from wood and stone, Lyons decided 'Stagnight' was too ostentatious and the piece was never sited in the forest.
It did, however, go on to be exhibited at various locations around the country, most recently in York in 2016 as part of the 'Half Light' collection, where it appears to have been sited under an apple tree, judging by the tasty-looking fruit on the floor in the picture.
The piece it's still intact, so who knows? Maybe one day it will be sited at Grizedale after all.
