Threshold Figure

Walter Bailey 1997

Walter Bailey built three sculptures at Grizedale in 1995, and two years later he returned, at the request of Head Forester Bill Grant, to make two figures. The first was 'Threshold Figure' and I'm not sure where it was sited, but it may have been away from the prying eyes of the public, as the two figures were commissioned by Grant as part of a private collection.

The second piece was 'Coniston Figure', which was located on the shores of Coniston Water, sadly making it ineligible for this website, as it was outside the forest park boundary. Harsh, I know, but them's the rules. 'Coniston Figure' can be seen at Bailey's website, and 'Threshold Figure' looked very similar to it.

On the website, Bailey describes his approach to sculpture:

"I like to create sculpture on site, with materials found locally. In this way I seek to encourage a dynamic relationship between the people, the site and the sculpture."
