Declining

Johannes Bludau 1994

This creepy-looking piece consisted of little slices of tree on ropes, sprawling out over a massive area. It gave the appearance of tendrils snaking out through the grass. It was right next to Pat Leighton's 'Silurian Cant' and the tree at the centre can still be seen. Johannes Bludau, a sculptor from Germany, said in 'Natural Order':

"From the oak's misshapen mass a new organic shape evolves, manifestly intrusive, weblike, in its challenge to Man and Nature."

I thought I had pictures of this, but apparently not. It didn't last much longer than a couple of years, although the pieces were left strewn around for a while afterwards. It's hard to see why it was taken down, but possibly the wooden tentacles were deemed a trip hazard, as the walker had to negotiate them to continue along the path.
