Grizedale Deer

Claire Langdown 1978

This intricate wood carving was positioned around the back of the visitor centre, near where we now find Muf's 'The Wood For The Trees'. Claire Langdown explained to Peter Davies and Tony Knipe how this unique sculpture came to be, for their book 'A Sense Of Place':

"I stayed at Grizedale from January to April 1978 with David Nash and our two sons.

We were lent a large house which we camped in. The weather was wet and cold for the first six weeks, coming from Blaenau Ffestiniog this was a busman's holiday. Finally and beautifully the spring emerged.

The deer I carved was for the men who work in the forest. Bill Grant wanted to put it in the bar, but I wanted it to be where the men set off for work and return afterwards."
