Cloak Of Seasons
Walter Bailey 1995
'Cloak of Seasons' is perhaps one of the most commonly-seen sculptures outside of the central hub area, given its location by the forest road heading up towards Bogle Crag, a popular route for cyclists and walkers alike.
Walter Bailey described the Cloak's universal qualities in 'Natural Order':
"Whatever faith or belief we carry, the tides of nature move around us. Every breath we take is an affirmation of our connection with the earth. In the 'Cloak of Seasons' the figure wears a constantly changing garment of earth and sky. I celebrate the cloak we all share."
In the mid-nineties, the Grizedale Society acquired Summer Hill Country House, a property located at Hawkshead Hill, not far from Tarn Hows. In the grounds, visible from the road, sits another 'Cloak of Seasons'; presumably Bailey stayed there during his residency and left a calling card behind.
