David Evison 1980
I know where this one was - it was located near the big tarn in the south-western corner of the forest - but I don't have a photograph of it. Nor have I ever seen one, so I can't even describe it. To make up for this poor showing from me, here is a quote from Bill Grant, writing in 'A Sense of Place' about his recollections of Evison's residency and how he left his mark in more ways than just sculpture:
"When David Evison arrived, the accommodation situation changed very quickly, having just negotiated a five-year agreement on a barn in Satterthwaite. David pitched himself into clearing out about one hundred years of accumulated junk, and with the help of two students and about thirty gallons of white emulsion, he transformed the place into a very reasonable studio with very basic living quarters and a self-catering kitchen.
This transformation was completed in less than a month and provided a useful sculptors' base for the next five years, when the agreement was terminated. [Evison] made four abstract pieces, an amalgamation of sheet steel and heart of oak. Although his work was difficult for the public to understand, he will always be remembered for his lightning studio conversion."
