King's Table

Will Glanfield 1992

Will Glanfield's residency is listed on the guides as being in 1991, although it was actually in 1992. What's more, it was to the benefit of tired legs at the far end of the Ridding Wood Trail, where Glanfield's two seats were located. This one is listed on the Grizedale guides as 'Pacus', but I've gone with the alternate name 'King's Table' since this is what it is known as in the quote I'm about to pinch from the aforementioned website. The seat itself is still there, looking very much the same as it did when new, which Glanfield describes:

"As part of the rolling programme of residences at Grizedale, I was invited to live and work at Grizedale for two months (September and October), to create two site-specific sculptural seats. I spent a week walking in the forest, familiarising myself with the place and context. I also looked at many of the existing sculptures. I worked through a number of design possibilities, eventually arriving at two pieces which explored themes including natural cycles, decay and regeneration.

'We Free Kings' and 'King's Table' were both completed and sited in the last week of the residency. A cutting was created in the hillside to accommodate 'King's Table', and I worked with a local dry stone waller to create the surrounding wall."
