Circus
Joanna Hull 1988
In 1986, Alan Grimwood sadly passed away at the young age of 37 years old. Two years later, artist Joanna Hull came to the site of his 'Figure In A Pond' in Grizedale Forest with a view to honouring him with a sculpture of her own. However, she expressed concerns afterwards about her piece:
"After Alan Grimwood died I came to restore his Figure In A Pond and to build a 'monument' to him.
In making a 'monument' for Alan I looked back and found that I had made a circus, unintentionally disturbing the peace of his figure already reigning over the pond. I hope he is enjoying the spectacle!"
Joanna Hull needn't have worried, as although 'Figure In A Pond' was a contemplative piece, Grimwood's sculptures often displayed a sense of fun, most notably his 'Rabbit' works.
'Figure In A Pond' disappeared some years later and now it is difficult to find traces of 'Circus' as well. In fact it's difficult to tell there was even a pond there at all, as the grass and reeds have grown up and turned it into more of a swamp. If you look hard enough though, by the side of the road at Bogle Crag just north of Richard Caink's 'Habitat', you may just make out the framework of this memorial-turned-carnival.
