Dunkeld Seat

Nigel Ross 1995

A whopping great monolith of a bench, 'Dunkeld Seat' was located in the meadow at the far end of the Ridding Wood Trail, grandly overlooking the valley. In Bill Grant and Paul Harris' excellent book 'Natural Order - Visual Arts and Crafts in Grizedale Forest Park', Meg Falconer writes:

"This is a splendid seat, a giant, situated in the finest location along the whole trail, commanding broad views across the valley to the forest beyond. Worked from one piece of Dunkeld larch, sawn along its length, then cut in half and subtly joined again to give movement. It is contoured and sculptured to "tame" it. A great wild, yet placid creature, it somewhere has reference to wings and flight, on this wide open site."
