Wolves

Sally Matthews 1993

After her 'Wild Boar Clearing' and 'A Cry In The Wilderness' had proved popular, Sally Matthews returned to the forest a few years later to make 'Wolves', a sculpture which continued in the style of her previous works, as a glimpse into a scene ripped straight from the natural world. She told Bill Grant and Paul Harris in their book 'Natural Order':

" In 1993 I was able to make Wolves. There was a site at Grizedale, a large sloping outcrop of slate with views over the valley. It's a wonderful site especially when the mist is down, or when the rocks steam in the sun. The perfect place for wolves to gather before a hunt."

The location was previously surrounded by thick woodland, but since 2011 has been exposed in the wake of tree felling. As a result, while the spot now offers great views over the Dale Park area, this piece hasn't held up quite as well as Matthews' other two. This may be why, in 2021, Sally Matthews decided to return to the forest to make some more.
