The multi-talented Charles Poulsen is based in the Scottish Borders with his wife, fellow artist Pauline Burbidge, dividing his time between sculpture, growing sculpture and drawing. In 1997 he enjoyed a fairly prolific residency at Grizedale, creating five works during this time. 'Blind Wall' was on the stony path which climbs from the Visitor Centre up towards Grizedale Tarn and back then formed the beginning of the Silurian Way. Poulsen coated a section of dry stone wall in lead, giving it an otherworldly look. Poulsen's description of the process goes like this:
"The two lead sheets were suspended above the wall and then gradually let down round the wall as I beat the lead into position with wooden lead-bossing mallets and sticks."
Apparently the lead was eventually stolen sometime around 2010 and the piece went back to being a wall. An unsuspecting walker passing by would now never know it had once been a sculpture.
