Heron and Swan
Keith Alexander and Colin Wilbourn 1990
While in Cumbria, Keith Alexander and Colin Wilbourn enlisted the help of local schools to make their sculptures. 'Heron and Swan' was placed in the grounds of Satterthwaite and Rusland School, down at the bottom of the forest, and was one of the few sculptures visible to motorists, just on the other side of the wall, next to the road. It was hardier than it looked, and lasted until the end of the nineties. For more about the school itself, go to the page for Don Rankin's 'The Fort'.
During their time in the Lake District, these two north-eastern artists also went to the Lakes School at Windermere, where they made 'The Crier Of Claife', a sculpture based upon the local legend. The story goes that a troublesome spirit would terrify ferrymen and passengers on the Sawrey side of Lake Windermere with his calls for help. He became such a pain that they called in an exorcist, who banished the noisy phantom to the quarry up at nearby Claife Heights and ordered him to stay put until "men walk dryshod across Winander and trot their ponies through solid crag" - Windander Mere being the old name for Windermere.
