Larch Arch

Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley 1991

The partnership of Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley has been a prolific one, both at Grizedale and elsewhere. After an initial residency in 1986, the duo returned to help kick-start the relaunching of the mile-long Ridding Wood Trail as a dedicated sculpture walk, by making some pieces to line the route. The unmissable 'Larch Arch' was built at the very beginning of the trail, for the visitor to stroll through upon commencing the walk. The structure itself was carved from a fallen tree which Partridge and Walmsley found over on the other side of the forest.

You can see in the photo that there are signs of weathering, especially in the left-hand side, but overall the arch has lasted incredibly well. The pointy building in the background there is The Yan, a recently-built studio, which acts as an exhibition space and an excellent activity centre.
