Windblown

Richard Harris 1991

Situated on the stretch of forest road between Bogle Crag and High Bowkerstead, 'Windblown' was designed to resemble a ruined house, with large timber beams and an angled floor. It was taken off the map in the early nineties, yet fragments remained for quite a while after that. In 'A Sense Of Place', Harris discussed his approach to sculpting in Grizedale:

"In Grizedale the chosen site plays a major role - with the sculpture I build forming an extension, rather than competing with the forest, drawing attention to certain aspects of it. The sculpture can act as a reference point, from which to re-explore the forest."

Harris was talking about a completely different sculpture, years before this one's construction, but the description feels apt. 'Windblown' felt less like a sculpture and more like wandering through the eerie site of a natural disaster.
