Multiple Arch

Robert Koenig 1982

Multiple Arch was part of a trio of sculptures, along with 'Triangular Suspension' and 'Trophies', built separately yet grouped together to give the impression of a primitive and long-abandoned industrial site, as Robert Koenig explained in 'A Sense Of Place':

"My idea was to make at least three pieces and place them together to give the feel of a compound, as though placed there for a purpose,  as evidence of some sort of activity... remnants of an event or of a once-permanent site, a place of worship, something going back, into a primeval time."

The mythical 'plateau' I've heard so much about, where the three works were supposed to be sited, was just up the hill from Alannah Robins' 'Ban-An-Tishka', yet I've never been able to find it. Robert Koenig described Multiple Arch itself as:

"Three arches... joined together to form a triangular structure. Various shorter elements were either suspended on the horizontal lengths or inserted into the ground within the structure."
