The Spores

Kerry Morrison 1998

I liked 'The Spores'. I was walking along the Ridding Wood Trail one day, when I encountered sculptor Kerry Morrison and a couple of assistants hoisting oversized wooden mushrooms into place. We talked for a bit and since then, it was my favourite Ridding Wood sculpture, although it's gone now, sadly. 'The Spores' themselves actually stretched all the way up to the top of the footpath that takes a sharp left off the trail and climbs up to the forest road. I never counted how many there were; I wish I had. There must have been nearly a hundred of them.

As a footnote, the path that 'The Spores' took up the hillside was part of the Silurian Way for a while, but someone at Grizedale must have realised that this route was ludicrously steep and it was changed fairly recently.
