Portrait Of Sculptures and Places IV

Eric Geddes 1982

Portrait of sculptures & places 4.png

Portrait of Sculptures and Places number four could easily have been walked past by the unwary rambler, dismissed as the product of a recent gale. It consisted of two dead trees, one leaning against the other in a show of arboreal support.

As I've said on the other 'Portrait' pages, Eric Geddes likes to keep his sculpture-building as natural as possible - you won't hear the whirring of power tools where he's working - and does not use glue or nails in fastening his works together. It's easy to understand, then, why his works at Grizedale were only temporary, and it's interesting to wonder what a health and safety officer would make of his 'Portrait of Sculptures and Places' collection now. Seeing him constructing one of these pieces would probably bring them out in a cold sweat.
