Untitled No.1
David Evison 1980
The first in a series of four pieces by David Evison, this could be found just up the road from the Bogle Crag car park. Of his 1980 residency, Evison had this to say:
"The sculptures I have sited at Grizedale are intended to appeal more to the senses than the intellect, and those with little knowledge of modern art will be able to 'understand' them if they approach with an open mind. In fact, untutored eyes are unfettered by what they expect art to look like which is often a considerable advantage over others with more knowledge.
The sculptures are abstract and have no reference to the figure or figurative subjects. I make abstract art because since around 1920 the best contemporary art has been abstract. Why art became abstract is a complicated story but in a nutshell, the abstract artist works with the 'bones' of his art, the materials, proportions, form, drawing, composition.
I can appreciate the problems many viewers have with abstract art when I consider my own feelings about modern music. I prefer listening to Mozart than Stravinsky, melody rather than atonality, and listening to Stravinsky demands a lot more effort. But I feel it is necessary to grasp what the art of the 20th Century is about and the effort can be rewarded. It is surprising how the art of our time is not so different to that of the past."
