God Of Thunder

Shigeo Toya 1995

This sculpture sometimes goes by the name of 'God Of Thunder 4', which would imply that there are at least three others, but aside from 'Underground Tree', this is Nagano-born artist Shigeo Toya's only sculpture at Grizedale. A tall tree, stripped bare and marked with small carvings all the way to the top, it could be found on a path in the western edge of the forest which leads down to the High Dale Park area. Toya said of the piece:

"Pain accompanies anger. The Thunder-god in pain makes a wry face. Pain is transmitted to a tree in a fusion with the Thunder-god. The allegorical tree is full of death and yet beautiful. The tree that is handed down in stories. A signpost that leads to the other side of the door."

It became significantly easier to find when the trees in the area were felled, although on the other hand, the top of it was lopped off, halving its height.
