The Signpost

Robert Koenig 1983

'The Signpost' sat on the stretch south of Carron Crag, occupying the once sculpture-rich footpath which runs from the clearing at Scale Green to the forest road to the south. It disappeared sometime in the late 1990s and was made with wood found in the vicinity.

A cluster of seven arrows (which would later become six after one of them broke off) intertwining as they stretched, tendril-like, towards the sky to a height of around ten feet, 'The Signpost' was near-impossible to miss, sitting right alongside the footpath, as signposts tend to do.

All Koenig's sculptures at Grizedale were produced using wood scavenged from the area in which they were built, giving his works a natural, organic feel. Koenig was quoted as saying at the time:

"Working in the forest was a great joy for  me. I felt it was a most natural way of making sculpture where even a studio was not really necessary. The forest was a source of all materials, it produced an endless variety of sites."
