Home of the Rose

Sadie Clayton 2021

One of the contenders for 'Landmark', the 2021 television series on Sky Arts, 'Home of the Rose' is sited in exactly the same spot as 'Torment of the Metals', which is, interestingly, the only other sculpture at Grizedale to be have been made of copper (that I can recall anyway).

The piece represents Clayton's Yorkshire upbringing and the two pillars which hold the frame in place are made from born-and-bred Yorkshire dry stone, while the poles and the rose itself are copper; a metal which is said to be a spiritual conductor - indeed, Clyton suggests that standing underneath the rose provides a space for rejuvenation.

Although the three Sky Arts sculptures are only due to remain at Grizedale for twelve months, Clayton's website claims that 'Home of the Rose' is a permanent piece in the forest, so we'll have to wait until 2022 to find out who's right.
