Merry-Go-Round

Bulgarian-born Boris Kishkilov made only one sculpture at Grizedale, the magnificent 'Merry-Go-Round'. Found just south of the 'Red Sandstone Fox', it was unmissable, spinning and swinging in the wind by the roadside, although it wasn't quite as tall as the above photo makes it look.

Kishkilov said about the piece in 'Natural Order':

"The source of the artistic idea of my work is the traditional merry-go-round, which appears in the ancient Bulgarian folklore festival on Saint Lazarus' Day, a celebration of the passing winter and the renaissance of nature during spring time.

This work is planned to be a mobile structure, which goes round and sways in its upper part.

The silhouette of the sculpture reminds me of a female figure, symbolizing the maternity and fertility of mother nature. The image of this wooden figure possesses some typical elements of the old Bulgarian architecture."
